  5.     DIED. Joseph Fletcher, 86, pioneer in biomedical ethics
  6. whose 1966 book, Situation Ethics: The New Morality, provoked
  7. spirited debate about modern theology; in Charlottesville, Va.
  8. In the 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy attacked the philosopher
  9. and Episcopal priest as "the red churchman" for his social
  10. activism on behalf of labor unions. In Situation Ethics Fletcher
  11. proposed a "new morality" based on the diminution of biblical
  12. absolutes of right and wrong. The only valid ethical test, he
  13. argued, is what God's love demands in each particular situation.
  14. While scholars criticized the concept as too vague, it struck
  15. a chord in a decade marked by rebellion against doctrinaire
  16. rules.
